Writing

I have been telling stories since I was quite young. I’ve pretty much always been a sucker for a nice notebook, and many of the ones I got early on became home to half finished shorts or little vignettes (my ADHD went undiagnosed for many years, and finishing things is still hard sometimes). I still have some of those first pages, and while my adult brain is pained by the fact that so much of the notebook remains unused, it feels wrong to start trying to fill them now.

In elementary school I wrote and illustrated my first book, and even had it bound (thank you, mom). I’m not sure I still have that one, but I do remember it was about a girl who was only three inches tall (I think her name was… Madeline? Matilda? It started with an M). I also know that it contained some thinly veiled allegories for my own grade school frustrations.

Long before I could afford therapy, reading and writing were the ways that I understood and processed emotions. And even now that I can afford therapy, the notebook is one of the first things I reach for when I need help or comfort or catharsis. Today, I offer myself through my words in the hopes that someone might recognize themselves in my stories.

My goal as a writer is to offer a portal of transformation; to weave a vision out of words so that you might experience, even for a moment, something outside yourself. Long before we ever wrote them down, words and stories were the way we built our world: singing songs, sharing news, teaching our children, celebrating love, grieving the lost.

Through my writing, I endeavor to hold the mirror up to nature, speak truth to power, and to figure out how the f*** to live in this body, on this planet, and in this life. I do genuinely think that stories can change the world, change our minds, and teach us how to imagine hope, to remember freedom, and to create the world we want to live in.
